It’s 2020 & everyone is talking about publishing a video on YouTube to get free traffic…But have you ever published a video on YouTube & didn’t get a single view?

You can agree with me that it’s a very frustrating experience.

YouTube is the world’s second-largest website. 2 billion people use it every month. 73% of adults in the U.S. use YouTube.

The stats don’t lie… There are billions of people on YouTube waiting to be engaged by your content, but it’s easier said than done.

In this article, I’ve highlighted 3 easy hacks you can implement to boost your video views overnight.

I will assume you already know basic video practices like ‘creating relevant videos for your audience’, so I won’t bother covering those parts.

1. Write A Good Title & Description for your Video


A lot of people make the mistake of thinking YouTube is only a social platform, which is wrong – It’s also a search engine… In fact, it’s more of a search engine than a social platform.

And one of the ways to get massive views on YouTube is by optimizing your video for search.

In other words, When your ideal viewers go on YouTube to search for a video, they should be able to see your video among the search results – and this is only possible if your video is ranked properly.

So the best way to improve your video search ranking is to make sure that the title & description of your video contains the keyword of what your ideal viewers are looking for.

How do you possibly know what your ideal viewers will be searching for?

The answer is research

You can visit forums & groups that relate to the niche of your video, follow the common discussions in those groups & take note of the common complaints & questions that people ask.

Another way to do it is to use a tool like Google Keyword Planner

 

With this tool, you’ll be able to see exactly what people go on Google to search for, in different niches… Take note of different search queries, then pick out the keywords that appear mostly in the different search queries.

You can develop a title & description for your video using the keywords you discover.

 

2. Pick SEO Friendly Keywords to Tag your Video


A lot of marketers just publish videos on YouTube without adding tags – again this is a very big mistake…

It’s why most videos struggle to get views.

Just like your video title & description, adding tags to your video also helps the video to rank better… But most importantly, It makes YouTube list your video among related videos that a viewer can also watch after watching a particular video.

 

For example; here’s a video with about 4.1 million views. At the sidebar, you have a list of other videos to be played next after the current video… If you observe, you’ll find out that the videos are from different channels & they are not really related.

But they’ve been grouped to form a list of relevant videos that the person watching the current video with 4.1 million views will also be interested in watching.

See what’s happening here;

YouTube’s main goal is to keep viewers on the platform for as long as possible (so that they’ll see as many ads as possible.) Thus the algorithm’s job is to feed viewers one incredible video after another.

But the algorithm doesn’t know what an incredible video is, so it follows a set of rules to group these videos.

  • Videos from the same channel
  • Videos that a lot of people like, based on engagement, watch time, and views
  • Videos that a specific person might like, based on their viewing history
  • Videos with related or similar metadata (i.e., titles, tags and descriptions)


From this list, you can see that the only one you have control over is the fourth one.

If your video has similar tags with another video that’s popular on YouTube called video A, there’s a high tendency that your video will be grouped to play next after ‘video A’… which will cause your views & traffic to increase.

So how do you copy the tag of a popular video and add it to your video?

Unfortunately, YouTube video tags are not visible, but here’s what you can do;

First of all, you go to your top competitor’s YouTube channel & look for the most popular video in there… Click on “sort by” and click on “most popular”.

 


When you see the video you’re looking for, right-click on the web page and select “View Page Source.” Then CTRL-F “keywords” until you find the list. Copy the keywords, and paste in your video tag then publish.

 

 

3. Create Custom Thumbnail


When you visit YouTube to watch a video, what’s the first thing you see?

… It’s a thumbnail image.

The truth is – thumbnails are a major part of your video… It’s the difference between a video with high views and a video that’s struggling to get views

People are moved by visuals… once they see that your thumbnail is looking terrible or you have no thumbnail at all, they will hastily ignore your video & watch that of your competitor.

 



Here are some properties to consider when creating a thumbnail image;

  • The thumbnail is clear and accurate about the video it’s describing (if your thumbnail misleads people into clicking, YouTube will know because your watch time will go down when the viewer gets annoyed and stops watching. The algorithm won’t like that.)
  • The thumbnail stands out.
  • The thumbnail works in tandem with the video’s title.


When it comes to getting high views in your videos, a great thumbnail can make all the difference.

By default, when you upload a video on YouTube, YouTube will automatically take a scene from your video & make it a thumbnail… But YouTube thumbnails are not as effective as when you create a custom thumbnail for your video.

Creating a good thumbnail will require you to be very creative and have a good design skill… If you can’t do it yourself, you can hire an expert to help you while you pay the person.
